Since Marwencol's school had been bombed by the Nazis, Hayden had to go to school in the next town. She preferred to walk because she wanted to enjoy life, before it would be lost again, when her adopted Father went away to become a legend. That's when we in the story, 'all fall down', for eternity. This saddened Hayden, as she walked home from school under a Marwencol-escort, and thought about it as a 'whole'.
