The plane, the P-40, was bought for me, because the guy wanted to see what I would do with it in my story ! He always wanted to fly in real life, but some disabilities kept him from flying real planes. So, he joined an R/C flying club, and that's the only way that he can fly now :)
I went to school with his wife, and he asked her one time when she was looking at my storybook, "where's his P-40 that he crash-landed ?". Lisa his wife told him, "he doesn't have one." He said that I give the 'illusion' that all of the pilots are in a 1/6th plane ! and I didn't have a 1/6th plane ? Well, he took care of that for me. :) Before I knew it, a huge, long box was being delivered to me on my doorstep ! It's an "ARF" (Almost Ready to Fly), R/C instructions and hardware, a 63" fiber-glass fuselage with ribbing inside, and 73" long vinyl covered plywood ribbed wings ! I fished through my electric motors to make the prop spin for photos, and I found the biggest racing motor that I had (it almost got an M-5 motor mounted in it :), and mounted it with epoxy where the gas engine would've gone. I bought the largest wooden prop at the Hobby Shop, and painted it black with yellow tips. I found my switches box and picked out a switch that was inconspicuous, and mounted it. I finished it in a week. At first, I ran the motor to turn the prop with a 9v. battery. . . then, I remembered the M-5 12v. battery , hehehehe :) The prop spins like 200- 300 rpm, just enough to photograph the illusion of flight :) Then I remembered the 12v. Celica battery, and that it was smaller and lighter. I got it, and hooked it up and placed it in the cockpit between Hogie's legs !! It fit !! I split the canopy to match the real life P-40 canopy. I made a seat and covered it in real leather, and made a dashboard, that I had to steal the speedometers from my motorcycles to make like a plane's dials :) I took pictures of the whole mess, from start to finish :) |
