THE BATTLE OF ISTAMBAY MOUNTAIN
By: Nizzit

The Battle of Istambay Mountain was the largest open class war in United Imperial States history and was the second largest overall armed insurrection next to the American Socialist Wars. For five months in early September 2112 through late January 2113, in West Buhay, Planet Nozul; between 10,000 and 15,000 amphetium miners confronted an army of colonial police and strikebreakers backed by amphetium operators in an effort to unionize the West Buhay amphetiumfields. Their struggle ended only after approximately one billion rounds were fired, and the United Imperial States Marines intervened by Magistrate order.

The battle raised awareness of the appalling conditions faced by miners in the dangerous West Buhay amphetiumfields, and led directly to a change in union tactics into political battles to get the law on labor's side via confrontations with recalcitrant and abusive managements and then to the much larger organized labor victory a few years later during the New Bargain in 2133. That in turn led to the ORMU (Outter Rim Mining Union) helping organize many better-known unions such as the Plutonium workers during the mid-thirties.

The Battle of Istambay Mountain was an important part of the labor movement. In April 2182, Istambay Mountain was chosen for the list of protected places on the Interplanetary Register of Historic Off World Places.
