JAPANESE KNEE MORTAR SQUAD
By: BC Ries

Here are some pictures of the squad that I have been working on for quite some time. I just finished my IJA Sergeant, he was the last member of this squad. The squad is made up of 3 knee-mortar gunners, 3 assistant gunners, 6 riflemen and the squad leader. A Japanese Infantry platoon would have 4 squads. 3 would be equipped with 1 LMG and riflemen and the fourth would be the knee-mortar squad.

In the first pictures you can see my Squad leader he carries a Model 38 6.5mm carbine which I made by cutting down the rifle from the TUS Japanese weapons set. He also carries a map case so he can plan movements and how to best position his knee-mortars.

After that I have him bossing around the rifle section of the squad. The riflemen carry the Model 38 long rifle from the TUS Japanese Infantry figure. I modified the bayonets so that they can be attached to the rifle. I couldn't stand to see Japanese infantry who couldn't attach their long bayonets to their rifles. All of them have custom leather slings with brass hardware. My riflemen also have handtied helmet nets.

Finally I have the entire squad all together, All of my Knee-Mortar gunners carry custom made Knee-Mortars with custom pouches. They don't wear helmets because they prefer to use their Knee-Mortars for indirect fire. The assistant gunners carry model 38 carbines as well as extra ammo for the Knee-Mortar gunners.
