VAGABONDS: OUR FIRST PRISONER
By: Alan Jones

Journal Entry:
I thought I should keep a record of the Vagabonds adventures, thus this diary has begun. The picture, forgive the fuzziness for I think sand gets in the lens& Sand gets in EVERYTHING here in the desert. The photograph is of our 1st capture. In truth the German was a mounted currier who surrendered seeing us. It appears that he was appalled at what the Axis troops were doing to the civilian populations and wanted to be no part of it.

In the picture you can see most of the Vagabonds, from the far left& my sniper handing me my first war prize, one of those fancy German pistols taken from our capture. Many units want nothing to do with integrating colored troops into their units& but I found this man both a crack shot and an honorable gentleman& in the background Carey admires the pistol& she's a bit of a mechanical genius. As mentioned, that's me, Alan, sitting on the hood of the Brit GP. Next to me is my Second in command& Aaron, who was a member of the circus in real life and a expert pistol trick shooter. I've seen him shoot a playing card in half& sideways, from ten paces. Sitting in the driver's seat the Brit Corporal who was a Sergeant, a story for another entry& he's a communications specialist and linguist. Our other Brit Advisor, the Sergeant in the passenger seat is Markus (Named after to honor HOGIE!!!), who was a Captain, again a story for another time& in the back of the GP, two civilians- one who saved my life, the one with the long beautiful hair and almost albino complexion, there is something very mysterious about her& and my medic. At the rear of the Willys my heavy gunner and scout who is also a desert survival expert, the Kraut kneeling before them.

Our 1st capture & perhaps you can ascertain my team is both excited and nervous& I think that poor German had a half dozen arms aimed at him in the photo. If this is to be a true account of the Vagabonds perhaps I should start before this& at the beginning.

(TO BE CONTINUED!!!) - Lt. Colonel Alan C.O. of the Vagabonds, North Africa via New Hampshire
