JAPANESE CAVALRY OFFICER
CIRCA FALL, MANCHURIA CHINA, 1941

By: Graeylin

He wears a fur trimmed leather coat for maximum lightweight with warmth. He has a fur lined Cossack Hat, very popular among the Japanese serving in Manchuria at the time. He carries a short Cavalry version (carbine) of the Arisaka rifle, a type 44, modified for use in the cavalry (easily made from the 21C rifle). The canteen on the rear of his bedroll is carried in a thick cotton carrier, to prevent freezing. He carries a bugle on the left front of his saddle, and a paper/map case on the right rear near his bedroll.

He also carries a Cavalry Saber, a longer/heavier version of the traditional Katana. Usually, only Cavalry soldiers gave up their katana's for a saber, but the saber had a longer reach than the officer/military katana, and worked better for attacking from horseback. With the katana, the soldier had to lean down too far out of the saddle to complete their stroke, and that was dangerous. The longer reach of the saber adjusted for that.

The canteen, bedroll and rice bag, cossack hat, rifle, important papers pouch and under uniform are all 21C. The figure is BBI, as is the duty bag on his right side. The sabre is SOTW, the canteen cover, boots and Armband are Hasbro. The horse is Dragon, the Bugle is from the pink box aisle. And I don't remember where the coat is from...
