VICKERS MG PROJECT
By: Rich

Since I did not get my project finished for that last contest I may as well show one of the items here. This is the old Hasbro Vickers MG that probably came out seven to eight years ago. The pic I had chosen for the contest had a Vickers manned by three paras in WWII Greece. Wish I had been able to finish it. Anyway, the pic did not show but one oblique view of the gun from the left rear so it I thought I could trim some time and not order the DiD version and just paint this one.

I started by removing the bulbous flash hider and replacing it with the smaller one from the Williams Bros model aircraft gun kit in 1:6th scale. This was followed by mold seam clean up on all of the pieces. The nylon/vinyl plastic makes it difficult to cleanly remove those mold seams so a little low speed buffing with a Dremel tool helps. All the parts were shot with a couple of light coats of Duplicolor black more or less as a primer. I had the paint on hand after painting some of the dash and interior door parts in my truck. Both of the colors I used in the truck worked so well that I was really impressed that I had bought a product that worked as the advertising claimed!

First I used a stubby cut down No.1 paint brush to rub powdered graphite into what would be the gun metal parts. The gun got its first shot clear flat, then the Testors brass metalizer was applied next. The green is a mix of artists acrylics then given washes of lightened shades of the same color followed by further washes of browns and black. Some light dry brushing of brass was applied to the cradle and the wood graining is the same as I did with that TUS Thompson in Update photo set #3383. One more shot of clear flat, then the ammo belt.

The belt is one from the DML's WWII Russian Sailor who had two draped over his shoulders. The belt had the rounds trimmed off and drilled out with a Dremel where the empty portion remained on the left side of the gun. This was a real pain in the butt, but, that was how it looked in the pic. To me it just shows that the Duplicolor worked as a base coat on this gun, and will probably work other soft plastics. It's only draw back is the limited colors. The acrylics by almost any company for modeling, art, and even those ceramics should work on the base.

Very nice work here my friend. It definitely looks a darn sight better than the Hasbro one did in its base form, that's for sure. I'll have to try this project for myself in the future. Thanks for all the cool tips! An excellent project here. Special thanks for sending it in and sharing it with us. - GL
