Since the town of Marwencol was moved to a better location, there was still the threat of the SS
kidnapping and eventually killing Anna, or I, or my troops. My friend, Jack-rabbit Slim, from the Hudson Valley in
New York State, stowed away in a ship (that made it across the Atlantic without getting torpedoed), then walked
across German-occupied Europe (without getting shot), past Le Morge France, gets as far as Eddyville, and that's
where Todd, Hank, and I, pick him up and bring him to Marwencol.
Jack is a survivor of the USS ARIZONA, and left the Navy after it was sunk at Pearl. We went into the service
together. He went into the Navy, and I went into the Air Corps. Now, in the middle of a war, in the middle of no
where, my childhood friend and I meet again. He told me that he practiced quick-draw, with a 7 1\2" barrel Army
Colt, every day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, 'till he got good...
