EXCALIBUR 11
By: Sabre

Following on from my communication earlier this month, here is a bit more about the photo shoot and weekend we call Excalibur.

The Army Cadet Force here in the UK is an organisation sponsored by the Army for young people aged between 13 and 18 years. Its moto is "Inspire to Achieve" and its remit is to encourage challenge and adventure in teenagers to help self reliant productive individuals who are good citizens, using the framework of military training. Our Cadets take part in a wide range of activities including adventurous training, shooting, first aid as well as drill, map and compass and basic battle craft. Our members can pass exams and gain civilian qualifications. Although not set up directly to be a recruiting agent for our armed forces we inevitably create a lot of excellent recruits and help youngsters achieve their chosen career if they want to pursue a life in uniform.

Excalibur
The weekend featured in the photo shoot was a competition held by A Coy Staffordshire Army Cadet Force (ACF). 9 platoons take part entering a section each to compete against one and other in a range of activities. The site was the culmination of the weekend and part of a battlecraft weekend.

The photo is of a prepared site that acts enemy location that the team have to recce'. Each section commander is given a warning order and then prepares and delivers a briefing to his team. They approach the target area tacticaly and set up an observation post looking over the location. Then using bino's they look for key elements of information that they deliver back to their HQ.

Although not tactically correct of course the model serves an ideal opportunity to practice the skills they have learned. Looking for elements including:
Layout of the camp. Including any roads, routes in and out and Sentry posts.
Strength and numbers of troops their dress and weapons.
Numbers and types of vehicles.
Any key points of strength including mortar pits, artillery and heavy machine guns.

Then they needed to identify:
HQ or command post.
Signals post
Stores location.

The one sixth scale gives us the ideal tool to prepare all this in miniature and yet still be large enough to give the realism aspect, it works well when you look through bios at a distance!

Outstanding Sabre! Many thanks for the background information on Excalibur too. I thought your previous shoot was a very cool one, but the fact that you're using this as a learning tool makes it extra cool. Special thanks for sending a few more photos of this in and sharing it with all of us. I sure do appreciate it! - GL
