CUSTOMIZED WWII SOLDIERS
By: R. Fisher

Here is my "Band of Brothers" figure, but he is not strictly Ultimate Soldier. The figure is and his gear is. His .45 Thompson is Dragon, and the uniform is Blue Box. The decals and Screaming Eagle patch are from Patches of Pride. This is perhaps my favorite figure.

Of course I had to put him into the 506th PIR (Band of Brothers). Speaking of the 506th. I had the rare honor of meeting one of the real "Band of Brothers" at the Wings of Freedom Air Show in Frederick MD, last month. I was able to shake hands and talk to Mr. Forrest Guth. I also got him to sign my copy of "Band of Brothers". He's a great guy. Its not often you get a chance to meet a genuine hero.

Unterscharfuhrer (Sergeant), 3rd SS Regiment "Der Fuhrer" 1939-40
This is another basic kitbash with some customizing thrown in. I used the figure, helmet, and pants from the Wehrmacht kit. I used the jack boots, KAR-98, and all gear from the Eastern Front Kit. I got the SS tunic from the machine gunner kit. I can't stand the political correctness crap on the 21st Century Germans. I corrected this by making my own sleeve patch where the swastika could be seen. I obtained helmet decals from Patches of Pride. I created my own NCO collar lace and Iron Cross (Second Class) ribbon. I topped it all off by creating my own cuff title "Der Fuhrer". I'm really happy on how that turned out.

The Der Fuhrer regiment did not fight in Poland, but would take part in virtually every significant campaign from then on. Along with the "Deutschland" and "Germania" regiments, these proud Waffen SS units would form the nucleus of the famed 2nd SS Divison "Das Reich". During the course of the war, the Das Reich Division would win 72 Knights Crosses, which was the highest amount won by any of the Waffen SS divisions. This soldier accurately depicts how the Waffen SS looked in the early months of the war (before they were issued their famous camo smocks and helmet covers). I'm pleased with how this figure turned out.

Unteroffizier (Sergeant) - Afrikakorps - 1941
This is another simple kitbash combining the two Afrikakorps kits. If you recall, one kit had the soldier in shorts and armed with an MP-40. The other had him in trousers with a KAR-98. I opted for the long pants from the one kit and the MP-40 from the other. I did some simple customizing by adding the Iron Cross (Second Class) ribbon to the tunic, along with the Iron Cross (First Class) from Dragon. The figure is from Hasbro. I removed his original oversized hands and replaced them with TUS hands. I also touched up the top of the helmet to give it a battle worn look. He is a good example of Rommel's famed Afrikakorps.

Very nice work again Rich. You've done some really sharp kitbashing work on all three of these figures. And those little details like new insignias just gives them that extra something special. Three nice looking 1/6th scale troops all the way around. Special thanks for sending them in and sharing them with us. -- GL
