Next to the US Jeep, the Kubelwagen is probably the most recognized vehicle of WWII. These were the back bone of German transportation. A light weight air cooled vehicle designed by Dr. Ferdinand Porsche.

The Kubelwagen served in every condition imaginable. From the frozen steps of Russia to the parched deserts of North Afrika. The Kubel was a reliable friend to the German. Kubelwagens where put to many uses and where often modified in the field and even in the factory

Here I set up my Kubel as a field modified reconnaissance mobile command car, utilizing a Torn Fud2 field radio. I used a 21st Century Toys Kubel Wagen, Tamaya and Testors Model Master paints and a variety of extras. I began by stripping down the vehicle, removing seats and masking off any areas such as license plates, mirrors, seats, tires etc. Then picking a base coat, in this case Testors Model Master Afrika Mustard. I then sprayed all areas of vehicle inside out, same with the seats. After dry, I removed tape and it was ready for detailing.

Now my philosophy behind detailing military vehicles is simple. War is hell and the vehicle should reflect this. So with this in mind I just imagine what kind of conditions my vehicle would have been under. Weather, terrain and theater of operation. These are all very important factors to the authenticity of the vehicle. In this case Italy was the theater of operation.

Using a darker tone I sprayed an irregular pattern for camouflage. Once dry I began to add scratches and wear. Then with thinned down dirty oily brown colored acrylic paint. I added washes to wheels and areas where I felt it needed it. At this point I began to add my gear and the muddy paint effect using my stucco, acrylic mix. I hope you like it. -- Fallschimartz
